Dalmatians - Puppies - Responsible Breeding
The importance of buying Dalmatians from a reputable breeder cannot be overestimated. The point is that world-wide liking for the breed led to a great number of inconsistent breedings, and consequently, to poor quality puppies.

Though some people involved in the breed state that one can hardly find a healthy Dalmatian nowadays, acquiring a puppy from a reputable breeder with pedigrees and evidence of thoroughly planned litters can partially eliminate the risk of buying a genetically unsound dog.
It is wise to determine how knowledgeable the breeder is. Dalmatians are prone to some congenital diseases, such as deafness, which is linked to genes responsible for pigmentation. Certain variations within the breed should be taken into consideration while breeding Dalmatians.
A special study of deafness in Dalmatians proved that it is better to avoid breeding unilateral dogs, or dogs that have different eye pigmentation in both eyes. Otherwise, the risks of unsound progeny increase significantly.
Actually, a good insurance against inherited diseases in Dalmatians, like in other breeds, is a pedigree. This document should contain description of the puppy, the names of the parent dogs, and ancestors of the puppy in a few generations.
Find out the breeder's experience in Dalmatians. It is a plus if the breeder associates with a kennel club, or a breed club. It will assure you that the breeder does not produce Dalmatians merely for showing his kids the wonder of birth.
