When choosing a puppy one is supposed to carefully examine it. By the age of 1.5-2 months, puppies that have already acquired strength and received proper socialization are ready to leave their mother. It is advised to watch for their behavior in the group of littermates. Sound Dalmatian puppies should be active, playful, curious at the sight of a stranger, and people-oriented.
Physical characteristics of a Dalmatian puppy should not be overlooked too. The backbone in a Dalmatian female should generally be milder than that in a male. Too solid bone structure is considered to be a serious fault.
A purebred dog should not have a curly tail, or too strong of a bite. Puppies with regular color are more preferable. In case you are going to use your future Dalmatian as a stud dog, you should avoid buying puppies with a congenital spots. Usually such spots are found on ears, or near one of the eyes.
Dalmatian puppies with differently colored eyes are also excluded from breeding. This condition, which is also called heterochromia, is quite common in Dalmatians. Veterinarians do not consider it to be a disease, though, since the dog's vision does not suffer. Such Dalmatians are generally healthy, and make wonderful pets.
Dalmatians - Puppies - Puppy Care
Since the Dalmatian is a very active dog, it needs a lot of exercise. It is a good idea if your pet spends some time outside. Dalmatians are usually not very sensitive to cold. However, a house suits the best for keeping these dogs.
Crate training is considered to be the beginning of the housetraining. There is no reason to see any kind of cruelty here. A high fence can help to keep your Dalmatian from getting into trouble.
As for food, one should be very careful not to overfeed a Dalmatian. They are known for high appetite and will hardly stand the temptation to eat an additional meal, if offered. To avoid obesity feed your puppy 3-4 small meals a day.
One of the most paramount concerns should be deafness in a Dalmatian. Dalmatians are leaders in the table of dogs prone to deafness.

Dalmatians Breeders - Dalmatians are old dogs whose appearance did not change greatly over a great period of time. It is definite that the breed was known in many countries and used to perform various functions. Nowadays, nobody can say for sure what the exact origin of the Dalmatian is. Many countries attempted to prove being privy to the dog's development. However, the official version speaks in favor of Dalmatia, a part of Croatia.
There are a few speculations concerning the breed's name. Many dog fanciers admit that it were British breeders who popularized its present day name. A huge relief found in Dalmatia, and depicting a similar dog, probably gave the impetus to the breed's name. Still, it can be that Dalmatian ancestors were firstly used in Dalmatia to guard their border from Turkish armies. The fact that these dogs were widely spread in Dalmatia is prompted by evidence that a huge kennel breeding about 500 Dalmatians was situated in this region.
